CTBUH Student competition 2012

23 September 2012: Three of our students attended the annual CTBUH Congress in Shanghai 2012. Noura Ghabra, Janet Jing Huang and Rong Xu won their way to the top five final group in the annual student competition, with their design for a 'Healing Tower' in the Elephant and Castle site, London, 2012. They won the 4th equal prize. The five finalists and the 20 semi-finalists all have their work displayed on :

"This project aims to tackle both environmental and social sustainability through the design of a tall building that meets Passivhaus performance criteria while responding to the human needs of health and wellbeing. It accommodates a mix of functions. The design agenda is embraced within the building through three states namely relax, nurture and heal."

Lukasz visits the TB studio

10 Nov 2011: Lukasz Platkowski of Gensler visited us for a day. We were very lucky to have him as he is doing a lot of travelling to Doha, Dubai and Riyadh, with major projects on site under construction. This was an ideal time for him to visit as he is expert on the process of form finding and configuring of tall buildings. Lukasz delivered a lecture at lunchtime, with some case studies of some of Gensler's current projects. This included the Shanghai Tower which is about 100m high now, and will be about 650m when it is completed. He also covered the KAFD World Trade Center in Riyadh.

Gensler are one of the world's largest architectural practices and their projects page is a wonder to behold!

As for the humbler projects by our students, he says he enjoyed the day and felt that everybody had a concept and a form developing. There's a week to go before the first interim crit, so we anticipate a tough week ahead of modelling and drawing.

Introduction

The Masters course in Sustainable Tall Buildings: (STB) introduces tall buildings as a strategy for urban sustainability and densification for the 21st C. It explores advanced concepts of urban and social living, smart structures and systems, vertical landscaping, construction, and bioclimatic design for super-tall skyscrapers.

The course is the first of its kind, and runs at the University of Nottingham, England, and is accredited by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The Faculty of Engineering decided to merge it with the all purpose MArch Design unfortunately (in 2015), but the taught modules continue.

In 2011, we took part in the Isover international student competition for the vertical Passivhaus skyscraper, New York, with three teams in the finals. In 2012, we had 2 groups of students as semi-finalists in the international CTBUH competition, one of which came 4th.

In the year 2013-2014, we were designing towers in Tianjin, Rotterdam, Singapore and London. Two of our designs won first and second prize in 2014, and we won first prize in 2015, with many teams in the semifinals.

In the years 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, we are designing 'Pocket Towers' in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, in first semester, and High rise clusters in London in the second semester.
